AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Fire Department responded to a house fire in the 1700 block of Riverview St. in east Austin early Sunday morning.

AFD was notified of a “heavy fire” at a home, and began attacking the flames around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday. By nearly 3:50 a.m., the fire had been put out and crews on site were working to remove and salvage items from the home while investigating the cause of the fire.

The fire destroyed a carport, and heavily damage the main part of the home as well as two vehicles. The expenses for the damages are estimated to be at least $72,000.

One person living at the home was transported to Dell Seton for smoke inhalation. The victim told officials that he was woken up by the sound of firetruck sirens, then broke out of his bedroom through his window, barely escaping.

The home had no working smoke detectors inside.
