AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin Fire is honoring a volunteer firefighter and chaplain for his decades of service, by naming engine number 48 after him.

For decades, Robert Moore, also known as the Red Rooster, worked with Travis County ESD 4, which recently merged with the Austin Fire Department.

According to Moore, his nickname goes all the way back to his birth.

“You know, when I was born to a midwife, my dad paid three dollars in roosters, and that’s why I got the nickname Red Rooster,” explained Moore.

Moore turns 84 years old this month, and he’s still on the job in Manor.
