6 Austin-area schools rank among top public high schools in the country

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Six Austin-area high schools are ranked in the top public high schools in the country, according to a new ranking by US News and World Report

The 2019 study graded 23,000 public schools in the country on various parameters including test scores, graduation rate, student-to-teacher ratio, class size and others.

Here’s a breakdown of the local schools that made the top 510 schools in the country: 

1. Liberal Arts and Science Academy (Austin Independent School District) 

  • National Ranking: 28
  • State Ranking: 5
  • Graduation Rate: 100%
  • Percentage of economically disadvantaged students: 7%

LASA was shown to have 44% minority enrollment and the student body is broken down into: 

  • White: 56%
  • Asian: 20%
  • Hispanic: 17%
  • Mixed Race: 5%
  • Black: 2%

2. Richards School for Young Women Leaders (Austin Independent School District) 

  • National Ranking: 137
  • State Ranking: 19
  • Graduation Rate: 100%
  • Percentage of economically disadvantaged students: 56%

Richards School for Young Women Leaders was shown to have 79% minority enrollment and the student body is broken down into: 

  • Hispanic: 65%
  • White: 21%
  • Black: 7%
  • Mixed Race: 4%
  • Asian: 3%

3. KIPP Austin Collegiate (KIPP Austin Public Schools Inc District) 

  • National Ranking: 198
  • State Ranking: 31
  • Graduation Rate: 95%
  • Percentage of economically disadvantaged students: 89%

KIPP Austin Collegiate was shown to have 99% minority enrollment and the student body is broken down into: 

  • Hispanic: 96%
  • Black: 3%
  • White: 1%

4. Westlake High School (Eanes Independent School District) 

  • National Ranking: 241
  • State Ranking: 37
  • Graduation Rate: 99%
  • Percentage of economically disadvantaged students: 3%

Westlake High School was shown to have 31% minority enrollment and the student body is broken down into: 

  • White: 69%
  • Asian: 13%
  • Hispanic: 13%
  • Mixed Race: 4%
  • Black: 1%

5. Westwood High School (Round Rock Independent School District) 

  • National Ranking: 304
  • State Ranking: 53
  • Graduation Rate: 100%
  • Percentage of economically disadvantaged students: 12%

Westwood HS was shown to have 56% minority enrollment and the student body is broken down into: 

  • White: 44%
  • Asian: 30 %
  • Hispanic: 17%
  • Mixed Race: 5%
  • Black: 4%

6. Vandegrift High School (Leander Independent School District) 

  • National Ranking: 509
  • State Ranking: 72
  • Graduation Rate: 98%
  • Percentage of economically disadvantaged students: 6%

Vandegrift HS was shown to have 31% minority enrollment and the student body is broken down into: 

  • White: 69%
  • Hispanic: 16%
  • Asian: 10%
  • Mixed Race: 4%
  • Black: 2%
