5-year-old dies after hit-and-run wreck in south Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 5-year-old girl succumbed to her injuries after a hit-and-run wreck in south Austin over a week ago, according to a news release from the Austin Police Department.

Illianna Martinez was riding in her family’s Toyota Venza on the morning of March 21 on Palo Blanco Lane near Teri Road. A Dodge Ram hit the Venza on the left side and witnesses told police the people in the Ram ran away.

“You did a horrible thing, to our family, you hurt a little girl who is innocent,” said Sabino Martinez, Illiana’s cousin.

The family is now in their hometown of Alice, TX, burying their daughter.

A bystander began CPR on Martinez before medical personnel with Austin-Travis County EMS arrived and transported her to Dell Children’s Medical Center with lacerations and broken bones. Her parents had minor injuries and were also taken to a hospital.

Martinez was pronounced dead at the hospital on Saturday evening.

It is unclear if police have charged anyone in connection with the hit-and-run wreck.

“Somebody needs to come forward because this is horrible man. It’s sad, but true, but need to catch these guys,” Martinez said.
