Three cats and a dog are dead and three people are displaced after a house fire in south Austin.

Austin Fire Department said it was called to the scene on Twisted Oaks Drive, which is just south of W. William Cannon Drive, around 7:30 a.m. with reports of fire and smoke from the back of the house.

Firefighters were able to get the fire under control and were evaluating two people who live at the house. One of those residents, a man in his 60s, had minor injuries but refused transport to the hospital. The other man in his 40s also had minor injuries and was transported to South Austin Medical Center. Crews remained on scene to extinguish hotspots.

Fire investigators say the fire was accidentally started by smoking material that was not properly discarded. They estimate that the fire caused about $300,000 worth of damage and the house is a total loss.
