2nd-alarm fire damages north Austin apartment building

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A fire in the attic of a building at the Longspur Crossing apartments in north Austin led to a second-alarm response from the Austin Fire Department, Friday afternoon.

First responders were called to 701 W. Longspur Blvd., just north of the Rundberg Lane and North Lamar Boulevard intersection, at 2:43 p.m. The fire, which damaged one apartment unit, was put out around 3:20 p.m.

The fire appears to have started on a balcony or the closet on the balcony. The cause is under investigation.

Ten adults and five children were displaced. The apartment manager is housing them in other buildings in the complex, AFD said.

The affected residents will not be able to return to their units until damage to the electrical system is repaired.

Austin-Travis County EMS was evaluating one person. Photos posted by AFD show the charred and collapsed roof of the 2-story apartment building.
