Local non-profit helping break barriers, empower young teenage girls

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Beyonce. First Lady Michelle Obama. Just two of many influential people working to empower young girls across America. Here in the Austin area, one Central Texas woman is already helping break the barriers that prevent young girls from finding their own voice.

Friday morning on KXAN News Today on the CW Austin, Marqita Wolber, is joining us to talk about the non-profit she founded 15 months ago. It’s called GEMS United.

It was created last year in Round Rock, Texas to encourage bravery in the midst of the chaos and pressures of life. The after school program offers an enriching, interactive curriculum to guide girls towards finding their own voice, developing self-awareness and discovering who they truly are.

Leaders of the group have a big goal: Expand globally. To help reach it’s goal while continuing to help others, GEMS United is hosting a fundraising event April 30. It’s an Alice in Wonderland theme Gala. For tickets click here.
