SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) — A San Marcos High School teacher turned himself in to authorities Friday after he was accused of having a sexual relationship with a student, according to San Marcos police.
On Jan. 24, the school’s athletic director and assistant principal reported to SMPD that two students came forward about what they said was an inappropriate relationship between history and government teacher Ian Michael Madden, 27, and a 17-year-old female student.
During the investigation, the student in question admitted to having a sexual relationship with Madden over a period of two months. According to SMPD, Madden also admitted to having sex with the student. Investigators also seized multiple text messages and photos of the two from the victim’s phone.
Once San Marcos ISD was made aware, Madden was suspended and a warrant for his arrest was issued February 15. According to police, Madden has retained an attorney.
SMISD tells KXAN it will now implement a mandatory training exercise for all of its employees that addresses student-teacher relationships.
SMISD spokesperson Anthony Fernandez said: “We provide professional development every school year, but something we want to emphasize even more now is relationships with students is not tolerated.”
