LEE COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — An inmate escaped from the custody of the Lee County Sheriff’s Office Tuesday morning as he was being escorted to district court with other inmates.
The sheriff’s office says around 9 a.m. Brandon Viator, 46, was able to remove one of his leg shackles and took off running.
A witness saw him get into a white pickup truck heading north on Burleson Street in Giddings toward US 290. Officers were searching the area when Viator was spotted in the town of Paige and a police pursuit began.
During the chase, the inmate dropped a woman, who was later identified as his mother, 66-year-old Madge Viator, off at a convenience store in Paige. The pursuit reached speeds up to 105 mph and ended at State Highway 21 and 95 in Bastrop County, the sheriff’s office said.
Before Viator was taken into custody, deputies say he got out of the truck carrying a .357 lever-action rifle in a gun case.
No injuries were reported. Brandon Viator, of Giddings, will be charged with escape, deputies said.
He faces existing charges of violation of probation/unlawful possession of a firearm and probation violation/deadly conduct.
Madge Viator, also of Giddings, will be charged with permit facilities escape.
Both are in custody in the Lee County Jail.
