CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) – Organizations across the country are showing their respect for law enforcement after the recent shooting in Dallas on Thursday.

Locally, one group did their part and named a number of law enforcement officers hometown heroes. The financial organization, Modern Woodmen of America held an event Saturday morning in Cedar Park where they invited members of the local police department to attend and be recognized.

Although the event was planned weeks ago, it comes at a time when organization leaders say it’s needed the most. “A lot of disruption in our nation, that alone says that we need to go an extra step. The job that they do is very important and when we need them, they’re there,” said Modern Woodmen of America Regional Director Kelly Herring.

The event is part of a summer long campaign called ‘Modern Woodmen’s Everyday Hero Campaign.’

“We really wanted to make an extra appearance to let our guys and ladies know that we really appreciate the work that they do,” said Herring.

Those wearing the Cedar Park Police Department uniform accepted the praise, along with a donation to a charity of their choice. “I would like to thank the community, the citizens for supporting us. It means a lot to us,” said one Cedar Park Police officer.

The praise from the community is something they say they need at a time when their entire department mourns for those three hours away in Dallas. “They are very grateful for it. I think it came across as intended, which was to be appreciative,” said Herring.

As the weeks go on, the organization will thank members of the military and other first responders.

The Modern Woodmen’s next event to honor law enforcement is just a few days away. The organization will be at the Round Rock Express game next Saturday.
