LIBERTY HILL, TEX (KXAN) — The Liberty Hill Panthers (14-1) will try to finish off a dream season with a State Championship when they take on Waco La Vega (13-2) on Friday at 3:00 pm at AT&T Stadium in Arlington in the 4A Division I State Championship game.
The Panthers earned a spot in the championship game by beating two-time defending champ Carthage on Friday night in Houston.
“It’s hit us, kind of funny, I was going insane Friday because we’re going to State, but It’s a different feeling”, said senior running back Kyle Harrison. “It’s super exciting, our team expects excellence, we’re like we know we can be great if we just play how we do.”
Harrison is a big reason for Liberty Hill’s success, on Tuesday he was named 2nd Team All-State with 2,761 yards rushing and 39 touchdowns.
Liberty Hill will be playing for their 3rd state title, they won back to back in 2006 and 2007.
“A lot of these kids were at our State Championship games, they’ve know the success we’ve had here,” said head coach Jeff Walker. “They’ve known the success we’ve had here, no doubt beating a Carthage, we beat a 12-0, Sealy, we’ve beaten some good football teams a long with the way and no doubt it’s going to give us confidence going into Friday.”
The advantage La Vega might have over some of those other teams is that they are familiar with that unique Slot T offense. The schools are former district rivals, in fact La Vega not only beat Liberty Hill in the regular season last year, but ended their season in the playoffs.
