FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — Sgt. Randy Thumann and his K9 partner Lobos seized 109 pounds of marijuana in a traffic stop in Fayette County on Monday.

At around 10:11 a.m., they stopped a truck on Interstate 10 for a traffic violation. During an interview with the driver, Sgt. Thumann identified several indicators the driver was possibly trafficking illegal drugs.

The driver consented to a search of the truck and Lobos began a sweep of the vehicle. Lobos alerted to the presence of narcotics in the vehicle’s auxiliary fuel tank. Sgt. Thumann was able to access the compartment, finding 11 wrapped bundles of marijuana with an approximate street value of $50,000.

Arturo Pena, 35, of Zapata, was charged with felony possession of marijuana and taken to the Dan R. Beck Justice Center.

Last week, in a departure from his regular drug busts, Lobos found a missing elderly man by following his scent.

Earlier this month, Lobos found almost 300 pounds of marijuana during another traffic stop. The bundles were similarly hidden in an auxiliary fuel tank.
