FAYETTE COUNTY, Texas (KXAN) — While K9 Lobos in Fayette County usually gets accolades for his drug busts, on Thursday he probably got an extra treat from his handler after he came to the rescue of a missing elderly man.
The Fayette County Sheriff’s Office say around 11 a.m. Thursday, deputies received a call from a woman who said her elderly father, who has dementia, had walked away from their home in the Vista Ranch area. Family members said they searched around their neighborhood for an hour before they called 911 for help.
Emergency crews from various departments assisted with the search for the missing elderly man. When Fayette County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Randy Thumann arrived with Lobos, the dog immediately set off in search of the man. Police say Lobos was able to detect a scent and followed it directly to the victim, who was on the ground behind an abandoned 18-wheeler trailer that was parked about 300 yards behind the home.
The victim was taken to a nearby hospital for heat-related illness.
