City inspector spent work hours doing personal business, audit says

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A recently released audit found that an Austin inspector spent time on the job working at his personal video editing business.

The employee works in the city’s Site and Subdivision Inspections program.

On his city-issued computer, city investigators found evidence that the employee accessed websites for both online platforms he operates.

Investigators found at least 12,000 hits between November 2017 and August 2018 related to his businesses, as well as to other online resources for video content, creation, editing, and rendering.

Inspectors also found over 100 search terms related to editing, videos, and animation.

The employee admitted that he spends anywhere between one and two hours of his city work time per day working on his businesses, but he told investigators that he does this during his downtime.

The employee’s supervisor said that their work group did not have any downtime due to the demands of the job.

The city tells us the employee still works for the Department of Development Services.
