AUSTIN (KXAN) — Some homeowners are preparing to file insurance claims after this weekend’s storms, hoping the insurance companies will cover the damage.
“Most insurance companies honor their insurance policies and handle claims properly,” said Jerry Hagins, a spokesperson for the Texas Department of Insurance. “Occasionally there is a problem and TDI’s Consumer Protection specialists are available to help resolve it. Last year TDI helped return more than $32 million to Texas insurance consumers in the form of additional claims payments and refunds.”
That money includes claims related to hail damage. According to the Texas Department of Insurance, consumers filed 524 complaints with the state last year about insurance claims involving hail damage to a roof. Insurance companies agreed to pay an extra $651,761 to settle hail complaints in that category.
Still, Mark Hanna with the Insurance Council of Texas believes that is a small number of claims when put in perspective.
“When you talk about all the claims, all wind claims and hail claims in the state of Texas, and all the money paid out, which is in the hundreds of millions of dollars… the number you just pointed out was probably less than a half of one percent,” said Hanna.
Hanna also points to the 304 of “justified complaints” homeowners filed last year, a figure that has gone down in recent years.
