HUTTO, Texas (KXAN) — The food desert that residents in Hutto have been living in is finally getting some much needed relief. In Thursday’s Hutto City Council meeting, the council approved an agreement to build a new HEB grocery store. Currently, in a city of approximately 20,000 people, there are no grocery stores in Hutto city limits.

The new 36-acre development is dubbed the Star Ranch Master Plan, which is located on the northwest corner of Gattis School Road and SH 130. The agreement for the lot is between the City of Hutto, HEB Grocery Company and Tack Development.

“It’s been on the radar for a very long time and we’re pleased with what you guys have come together and agreed upon. Thank you very much,” said Hutto Mayor Debbie Holland during the meeting.

The HEB grocery store, which is slated to open in the fall, will be 120,000 square feet and will also feature several other retail shops as well as a fuel station. Along with the HEB lot, Tack Land Development will develop a smaller strip center adjacent to the HEB property. Construction is expected to begin in March.

“I am proud of the HEB development that the City Council approved last night. The city staff did an excellent job of negotiating improvements to the agreements to bring in a high quality grocery store to the citizens of Hutto,” Holland said.

Due to the amount of traffic that comes along with a new grocery store, the city along with the Texas Department of Transportation are analyzing traffic impacts on the various intersections in the area. The city expects to put in new traffic signals on Gattis School Road at SH 130 and at Star Ranch and Farm to Market 685, along with several new roadways.
