Hundreds arrested during APD’s extended no refusal

AUSTIN (KXAN) — In an effort to cut down on drinking and driving during Spring Break and South by Southwest, the Austin Police Department ran its longest no refusal initiative to date.

Police say the 18-day run netted 336 arrests, 222 of which were made during the operating hours of the initiative (9 p.m.-5 a.m.).

Out of the arrests, 24 of the people taken into custody had two or more prior DWI convictions. Forty people arrested blew a breath sample above .15.

The initiative began on Friday, March 4 lasted through Tuesday, March 22.
