High school football season opens

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The road to AT&T Stadium in Arlington the weekend before Christmas begins this week around Texas. The Austin area has several teams that are expected to contend for state championships.

Lake Travis came up a win shy of the school’s 7th state championship in their loss to Allen in the title game and the Cavs are ranked 2nd behind Allen in the 6A poll. The Cavs open on the road at Arlington Martin. Lake Travis features two of the state’s most dynamic offensive players in senior receiver Garrett Wilson, committed to Ohio State and junior quarterback Hudson Card, committed to Texas.

Westlake is ranked 4th in the preseason 6A poll after going 14-1 last years with a loss in the state semifinals. The Chaps open the season at Belton on Friday night.

Cedar Park is ranked 10th in class 5A, the Timberwolves have won 2 State titles in the last 6 years and will take on Vandegrift Friday night at Gupton Stadium.

There are several schools with new coaches. Charles Taylor takes over at Pflugerville after leading McCallum to the state semifinals. Panthers will host Bowie on Friday night.

Jahmal Fenner is now the head coach at LBJ High School after a very emotional season in 2017.  Head Coach Andrew Jackson was battling cancer throughout the season and passed away in December. Fenner was handling most of the head coaching duties last season, but also consulting his mentor Jackson on a daily basis. The Jags open the season at Elgin on Friday.

A.J. Mustafa is the new head coach at Reagan High School replacing Keith Cary. The Raiders open the season Friday night against Cedar Creek at Nelson Field.

Three schools will be playing varsity for the first time. Tom Glenn out of the Leander ISD will open at Liberty Hill Friday night. Weiss High School in the Pflugerville ISD will host Leander on Thursday night at The Pfield. Manor New Tech will open their first varsity season at Weimar on Friday night.

We begin our 9th season of Thursday night High School football with McCallum vs Anderson at House Park. Since the game was named the Taco Shack Bowl, the series it tied 8-8.
