BUDA, Texas (KXAN) – In the wake of the newest Confederate symbols discussion, Hays Consolidated ISD leaders are looking at once again changing the Rebel mascot at Hays High School.
A district spokesperson tells KXAN they are gathering public input on their website right now to see if the community wants to see a change. The district will take those comments and work to formalize a plan this summer on how to move forward, should a change be warranted.
The school still uses the Rebels mascot for teams and the fight song is “Dixie.”
In 2000, the district voted not to use the Confederate flag as part of official symbols. In 2012, Hays CISD banned the flag from district property and district events.
