AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you’re in the middle of preparing dinner and forgot a bottle of wine to go with your meal, H-E-B and its company Favor can help you out.
H-E-B is now offering beer and wine delivery in the Austin-metro area starting Friday, June 29.
The company says customers can get free delivery on beer and wine orders this summer through Labor Day.
“The number one request that Favor has received for an addition of product launch is beer and wine,” said HEB spokeswoman Leslie Sweet.
The grocery store chain acquired Favor earlier this year and has been focused on expanding its services. The company plans to roll out more digital offerings to customers soon.
Chris Shawhan is a self-proclaimed lover of Texas craft beer. But, sometimes picking up a six-pack takes a little longer than it should. He blames H-E-B’s large selection.
“I like to try different kinds of beer when I come,” he said, “and I tend to lean towards the locals.”
Now he can cut down on the long trip to the beer and wine aisle; and, make choices faster using a simple description on the Favor app.
“I can go through and select it without wasting a lot of time looking at all of this,” Shawhan said pointing to the beer aisle.
For some customers, it doesn’t seem like the best fit. “I wouldn’t use it,” said HEB customer Trista Bullock. “But, I have a boyfriend who’s really lazy. He would use this.”
Sweet said all of the rules that govern alcohol sales across the state still apply. For instance, delivery runners must be 21 years old so they’re able to purchase the beer and wine. And, customers must show identification when the drivers arrive.
Drivers also have a scanning device to detect fake ID cards. And, drivers are allowed to return the alcohol if they suspect a customer may have had a little too much alcohol.
“If the Favor runner has any questions about whether or not it’s safe to leave that alcohol,” Sweet said, “they will be instructed to return it back to the store.”
The new service will be available in most areas of Austin from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 12 a.m. on Saturday and 12 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Sunday.
Beer and wine delivery in Georgetown will be available 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Sunday.
