Following child’s death, two parent meetings scheduled at Gorzycki MS

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A parent meeting is scheduled at Gorzycki Middle School tonight, after the unexpected death of a student.

In a letter sent home to parents on Thursday, the school’s Principal Cathryn Mitchell said one of their 7th grade students died. There were some rumors circulating the child died at the school, but district officials say that is not the case.

“We have met with the family about their grieving and that of the student’s friends. The family and AISD are very concerned about the health and well-being of students. Therefore, we are informing families today and will inform students tomorrow.” said Mitchell in the letter.

Since Wednesday, the school has had additional mental health professionals on campus.

Due to concerns from parents, the school hosted a session for parents only on Friday. According to the school’s website, at this meeting, which was closed to media, officials shared the communication discussed with students, the support and systems in place for students and families, incidents on campus, and next steps for Gorzycki.

Over the weekend, counselors will be available Saturday, April 11, from 9 a.m. to Noon at the school’s library.

Another parent meeting is scheduled for Monday, April 13, at 6:30 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. Experts will be available at the meeting to provide information on how to talk to teens about coping strategies and seeking help from experts.

Should your child or family need counseling assistance, stop by the school or please call 512-472-HELP (4357), which is the Austin-Travis County Integral Care Crisis Hotline.
