AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Animal Center has waived adoption fees for its kittens and cats through July 4.

The shelter currently has all cages full with 800 cats and kittens in its care, with around 250 at the center currently available for adoption.

The other 550 are in foster homes or receiving medical care, the center said Monday.

Deputy Chief Animal Services Officer Kristen Auerbach, said, “Right now, we have the best selection of cats and kittens of any time of the year. If you’re looking for a certain age or color, or even a special type like a Siamese or Blue Russian, now’s the time you can find it.”

All cats and kittens come spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, amounting to $300 or more in costs you will not have to pay during the waived period.

The center is asking for the public’s help to keep cats and kittens out of the shelter during this time. Here are three things the Austin Animal Center wants you to know:

  1. If you find a litter of kittens that appear to be healthy and are in safe location like a yard or under a tree, leave them alone and monitor them. Mother cats will often leave their babies for short periods of time and then return. For kittens old enough to be spayed and neutered, visit the Austin Humane Society feral cat page.
  2. If you find a cat that is sick or injured, call 311 to report it or bring it into the Animal Center during open hours.
  3. The shelter is in immediate need of kitten fosters. If you would like to foster, sign up here or just come to the Austin Animal Center to sign up and help save a kitten or an entire litter.

The Austin Animal Center is located at 7201 Levander Loop and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. The center will close at 5 p.m. on July 4.
