Extra law enforcement staged at major shopping centers for Black Friday

SAN MARCOS, Texas (KXAN) – San Marcos Police, fire and EMS are all on hand for the biggest shopping day of the year at the San Marcos Outlets.

An empty retail store at the outlets will be serving as a command post for officers ready to help the public at a moment’s notice. According to the City of San Marcos, a fire truck and ambulance will be on hand from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday through Sunday.

Management for the Tanger Outlets says sales and traffic are up over last year.

“We have tons and tons and tons of shoppers carrying a lot of packages and everyone is just in the holiday spirit,” said Tanger Outlet Center General Manager John Lairsen.

People travel from all around the world to be able to walk to hundreds of stores in a relatively small area at the outlets in San Marcos. .

“We are from Canada and we don’t have Black Friday it was a whole new experience for us,” said Black Friday shopper Sadie Friesner.

But with the promise of good deals comes crowded parking lots, busy stores and a safety concern for everyone. “It’s a lot of people, this is a big parking lot and it’s pretty full,” said Black Friday shopper from Hawaii Micah Tumpap.

Management at Tanger Outlets says with extra law enforcement on hand, they have shoppers covered. “By having all of EMS, police and fire department here, obviously it’s a quick response for anything that might happen. Although we’ve not had any incidents out here,” said Lairsen.

Lairsen says the city also planned in advance for the extra traffic. “They did install a new traffic signal this past year which is doing an amazing job, but in the event that it gets a little backed up they are right there to help people get out of the center conveniently.”
