NEW ORLEANS (KXAN) — Texas quarterback Sam Ehlinger walked into the Superdome wearing a throwback Westlake jersey with the name Brees on the back and left with a win and the Sugar Bowl MVP trophy.
“Coming into the Superdome, I had to respect Drew (Brees) for all the amazing things he’s done in this building and I honestly wanted to play like him and have a little magic,” Ehlinger said.
Austin Westlake is a quarterback factory from Drew Brees to Nick Foles and now it’s Ehlinger’s turn. He appears to be the next in line.
From one Westlake quarterback to another, Ehlinger paid his respects to a player he considers a legend and a role model.
“We’ve connected a few times and he’s always been incredible to me reaching out and always letting me know he’s there if I need it. He’s a tremendous role model because of what he’s done in the NFL and I thank him for that,” Ehlinger said.
The jersey definitely brought some magic to the Longhorns and Ehlinger. Texas won its biggest bowl game in a decade and Ehlinger led his team with three rushing touchdowns.
How Ehlinger acquired the jersey is a demonstration in thoughtfulness from a teammate, according to the Austin American Statesman’s Brian Davis.

The Longhorns got their statement win. Now, it’s up to Ehlinger to lead the way for the 2019 season and keep building on his resume’ that started with the Westlake Chaparrals.
“It’s a huge stepping-stone for our program, it’s going to carry a lot of momentum into the offseason and I look forward to getting back in January,” Ehlinger said.
