Draft Confidential: What do the Cowboys and Texans need?

NFL Draft 2018

NASHVILLE (KXAN) — The NFL scoops up its next group of talent this week with the 2019 NFL Draft commencing Thursday at 7 p.m.

The Arizona Cardinals are the first on the clock and most experts have the Cardinals and new head coach Kliff Kingsbury selecting Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray with the number one overall pick.

It should be a quiet night for the Dallas Cowboys, after trading away the rights to their first round pick for Oakland receiver Amari Cooper during the 2018 season.

The Houston Texans are selecting 23rd overall after sitting out of the first round in 2018. The Texans traded their 2018 pick when they drafted quarterback Deshaun Watson in 2017.

Cowboys Draft Needs

Without a first round pick, the Cowboys are forced to sit back and watch the dust settle. When it comes to making a selection in the second round, there isn’t a position where Dallas can go wrong.

The Cowboys should truly take the best available player on the board. Focusing on positions of higher need, drafting a defensive lineman, linebacker or running back would probably fill the biggest void on the current roster.

Cowboys Draft Picks

2nd Round- 58th overall
3rd Round- 90th overall
4th Round- 128th overall
4th Round- 136th overall
5th Round- 165th overall
7th Round- 241st overal

Texans Draft Needs

For most of the 2018 season, Deshaun Watson was running for his life behind a makeshift offensive line. The Texans will likely look at addressing that unit with the 23rd pick in the draft. The top offensive tackles will be gone if the Texans stand pat and wait their turn. Several mock drafts predict the Texans will move up to take Washington State offensive tackle Andre Dillard.

If the Texans aren’t going with an offensive lineman, they’ll likely take a defensive back. It’s possible the top-rated cornerbacks are still available with the 23rd pick.

Texans Draft Picks

1st Round- 23rd overall
2nd Round- 54th overall
2nd Round- 55th overall
3rd Round- 86th overall
5th Round- 161st overall

7th Round- 220th overall
