Dell Medical opens doors to first class of students

AUSTIN (KXAN) — The first class of students at UT’s Dell Medical school begin orientation Monday.

After years of planning, the school is finally opening its doors.

During a sneak preview Sunday, UT faculty and local leaders talked about the historic opening.

“Today is a historic day, today is a turning point in our city’s history,” Senator Kirk Watson said. “This truly is a great day to be in Austin, Texas.”

Two years ago, the spot on Red River where the Health Learning Building now stands was just a parking lot. Today, it is space where students will soon come to learn while preparing to become physicians.

“Medical school was a dream when I was in high school, and in college I kind of started to drift away from it,” new student Woody Green said. “I always said if a medical school comes to Austin, that’s for me.”

The inaugural class is full of only 50 students, out of 4,500 that applied.
