Defeated council candidate files lawsuit, wants new election

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Despite losing the election and a recount, a candidate for city council isn’t giving up.

Laura Pressley filed a lawsuit Monday in district court challenging District 4 City Councilman Greg Casar. Pressley maintains there were irregularities in the vote and wants a new election.

A recount last month to determine who won the District 4 race for Austin City Council turned up the same results as the Dec. 16 runoff election. Casar won the race by 1,291 votes over Pressley.

Despite the 30-percent margin between the two, Pressley elected to pay a $13,600 deposit to the city clerk’s office to have the votes recounted. Pressley wanted a hand count of the ballot, saying the electronic system and mail-in ballots were inaccurate and counted some votes twice.
