AUSTIN (KXAN) — A man died Sunday in central Austin after someone came up to him unprovoked and punched him, according to an affidavit.
The victim was in the Chili’s parking lot at 9070 Research Boulevard, next to Burnet Road, around 10:55 p.m. Friday when he said Jeffrey Robinson, 43, walked up to him and hit him.
He fell backward and was unconscious for about five minutes. “I was just sitting there and dude came up and clobbered me,” the victim told police afterward.
A witness told police she had been walking with Robinson Friday night when she pointed the victim out to him, saying “Oh, that’s Greg.”
She said Robinson made a comment that made her think he was jealous, and then he went over to the victim. “[She] said on a scale of 1-10 Robinson had struck [the man] in the head with a force of 10,” the affidavit said. She called 911 and stayed with the victim.
The man went to the hospital, where staff discovered he had a brain bleed. By Sunday at 3 p.m. he was declared brain dead.
Robinson is in custody as of Monday and faces a second-degree felony manslaughter charge. His bond is set at $50,000.
Anyone with information on the incident is asked to call the Homicide Tip Line at 512-477-3588 or Crime Stoppers at 512-472-TIPS.
