AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department received second-hand information in a text message Thursday afternoon claiming a man murdered his wife. Following a brief SWAT situation, a woman’s body was found in a southeast Austin home. The death of Patricia Campos, 54, who was identified by police Friday, is being investigated as a homicide.

Jose Israel Amaya, 39, has been charged with murder.

An APD officer originally received the tip about the possible murder around noon Thursday from an acquaintance. The acquaintance told the officer a friend of his claimed to have killed his wife two days earlier, police say.

The information was turned over to the homicide unit, which found a location and name. After getting a search warrant, the SWAT team was called to the 5400 block of La Loma Lane, which is in the Oak Ranch Mobile Home Community, off of Pearce Lane in southeast Austin around 1 p.m. When SWAT officers arrived, Amaya came out voluntarily, according to police.

Officers then found Campos inside the home. Her employer told detectives Campos had not shown up to work in two days.

Police say the woman’s death may have stemmed from domestic violence. Authorities expect to file murder charges against the suspect Friday.
