ROUND ROCK, Texas (KXAN) — The driver who slammed into a Round Rock police officer while he was working a traffic crash faces new charges since Officer Charles Whites died.
A Williamson County grand jury indicted Raul Martinez on two new counts of intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer and manslaughter. Martinez was originally charged with intoxication assault. Police say he was on prescription medication the morning of the crash on Feb. 25.
Police say Whites had his lights on and was wearing a safety vest. “While he was outside of his car in the midst of doing that traffic control, a vehicle went through the flares that he had set up and ended up striking Officer Whites,” explains Round Rock Police Chief Allen Banks.
If convicted, Martinez could receive 2-20 years for the manslaughter charge and five years to life for the intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer charge.
