AUSTIN (KXAN) — The 24-year-old man police believe is responsible for the shooting death of Davon Gross, 18, in northwest Austin Wednesday has been arrested and charged with murder.
Gross appeared to have been shot and killed while sitting in his car at a Valero gas station on Pond Springs Road at Hunters Chase Drive. Police believe the shooting was a targeted attack.
Stanley Earl Pates was booked into the Williamson County Jail Friday with bond set at $500,000.
“I counted 10 … 10 gunshots, and being outside I felt a little unnerved,” a witness, who did not want to be named, said of the shooting.
One of her coworkers saw a man running one way and another man running in a different direction after the shooting.
Gross’s mother told KXAN she doesn’t believe Pates and her son knew each other.
“I just don’t know why this person took my baby. What did my baby do to you? Who are you? We don’t know you. I’ve never seen you before. Why would you do this to my son?” she asked. “I’m still trying to grasp the reality that he’s not coming back. My baby is not coming back. Look what you did to my family.”
Gross’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help pay for his funeral expenses. The family is also planning to hold a vigil Saturday night at 8 pm near the Valero gas station where he was killed.
