Someone in San Marcos was scammed out of nearly $300 after falling for a scam where people posed as an official from the San Marcos Police Department. Now the real department is warning residents to be on the lookout for the “sophisticated” scam.
The scammer is “spoofing” SMPD’s number to make it appear a call is coming from the actual department. That person told the victim there was an outstanding warrant for unpaid medical bills and that they needed to pay them immediately.
The victim looked up the number and saw that it matched SMPD’s, so the victim bought pre-paid cards and sent the information to the scammer. SMPD says it will never call someone about making payments over the phone, and will not accept or ask for gift cards as payments.
“Never give credit, debit, or gift card information over the phone to someone unfamiliar who asks you for this information,” SMPD said.
Anyone who believes they may have been scammed can call SMPD at 512-753-2108.
