AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department has identified the man who died in a shooting that left another person injured in northeast Austin Thursday afternoon.
Dettrick Dwayne Arnold Harris, 20, died at the scene.
According to police, it happened on the 9700 block of Point Vista Place, near Bonnie Brae Street. Police say a number of people called about a shooting around 1:52 p.m.
Officers responded to the scene just three minutes after and found that a silver car had crashed into a home, APD says.
Inside, a male driver, later identified as Harris, was found unresponsive with gun shot wounds.
Police say an officer removed the man and tried performing CPR. ATC EMS took over shortly after. He was pronounced dead at 2:14 p.m. The Texas Medical Examiner’s Office will conduct an autopsy.
A witness ran to officers, APD says, and alerted them that a second victim who also had gunshot wounds was further down the street. That man had run into a home on the 1200 block of Bonnie Brae Street.
Medical aid was also given to that person before being taken to the hospital. Police said Friday he is in stable condition.
Police believe the shooting happened inside the car as an exchange of gunfire between the two men. One person got out of the car and asked for help, while the other was driving and crashed into a home, police said.
“Based on information gathered to this point, the homicide appears to be isolated to the two individuals involved and does not present an ongoing threat to the public,” APD said in a release Friday.
APD says it’s still an active investigation, and this is the 25th homicide for the city this year.
