Victim fought back, suspect faces murder charge after deadly east Austin robbery

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police arrested one person on a murder charge after a robbery that turned deadly in east Austin Sunday morning.

Police say 38-year-old Raul Luevano and two others robbed two men who live in the 2900 block of Pecan Springs Road, near the intersection with Manor Road. Luevano has been charged with murder after investigators say the robbery led to another suspect’s death.

Police were called to the residence a little before 8 a.m. Sunday when a neighbor called 911 and told the operator it sounded like someone was robbing her neighbor’s house and that her neighbor had been shot.

According to a police affidavit, the two men who live in the home were told to get on the ground and were held at gunpoint. One of those men said he would not get on the ground, grabbed a knife and began fighting, according to police.

Police say both residents were shot by the suspects. According to APD, the resident who fought the suspects stabbed two of them. As the suspects were fleeing the home, one of those who was stabbed collapsed in the driveway, police say.

First responders attempted life-saving efforts on the man, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Police say Luevano later dropped off the second suspect who was stabbed at the hospital. Investigators used footage of his vehicle to track him down and arrest him.

According to police, Luevano confirmed what happened and admitted that he and the other suspects were all three holding guns when they entered the home to rob the residents.

Detectives say they expect to make at least one more murder arrest. The second suspect’s name has not been released, pending his booking.

The name of the man who died will be released once police notify his next of kin. The Travis County Medical Examiner’s office will conduct an autopsy to determine his official cause and manner of death.

Detectives are asking anyone with video or more information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers at 512-974-TIPS or use the new Crime Stoppers App or email APD Homicide at

Neighbors shocked to watch the scene unfold

“It was definitely quite surprising,” said Andrew Devillier, who said his girlfriend walked outside to find part of their neighborhood blocked off.

Sharon Hernandez, who has lived in the area for more than 25 years, says she has never seen anything like what happened Sunday.

“I really didn’t understand it at first because my brother’s the one that called me and said, ‘there’s some activity going on inside your neighborhood,'” she said.

She and Devillier said over the past few years, this neighborhood has been pretty quiet.

“Some kids were like street racing through here… That’s nothing, right, like very petty crime, nothing like a breaking and entering or a homicide,” Devillier said.

But Hernandez hopes they can eventually move past the crime.

“We still have to be strong and we have to help out and keep our neighbors and know our neighbors,” she said.
