Neighbor describes scene after deadly north Austin shooting

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Police are seeking any tips or surveillance videos from nearby homes that might help them solve a deadly shooting in north Austin.

Jonathan David Rogers, 23, was found with a gunshot wound in the 1600 block of Mearns Meadow Boulevard around 10:30 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24. The shooting happened near Cook Elementary School.

Rogers was taken to the hospital where he died a short time later.

“It was really rough,” said Darius Gibson, who lives down the street. “He was just like screaming, ‘Help me! Help me! I’ve been shot!'”

Gibson called 911 and tried to help until police arrived. He says while he was trying to help, his roommates watched a tan Suburban with blacked out windows speed off, then drive by and speed off again.

During a news conference Wednesday, homicide detectives say they’re asking for the public’s help in the case. Austin police say if neighbors have surveillance cameras in the area or if they heard or saw something and haven’t talked to police, they are urged to contact them.

Homicide detectives are asking that anyone with information about the incident call 512-477-3588. They are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of the person who is responsible.
