Thursday afternoon, a 17-year-old former student of Akins High School was arrested after showing up to campus with a loaded handgun, the school’s principal said in a letter to parents.

An administrator recognized the teenager, Eduardo Mercado-Del Valle, as he was parking, and immediately told the Austin ISD police officer on the campus, Principal Brandi Hosack said.

As the officer approached the former student’s vehicle, he saw a handgun in the center console and detained the teen.

The suspect was found to have marijuana in his pocket. He was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a weapon and possession of marijuana.

“We all work together to keep our campus and each other safe, and I want to commend our administrator and our AISD police officer for their quick actions,” the principal said.

The gun incident comes on the heels of a security scare at the high school last month when 17-year-old Ariel Ramirez Navarro allegedly threatened to shoot up and blow up the school, leading to a school lockdown.
