AUSTIN (KXAN) — The Austin Police Department’s Sex Crimes Unit is investigating overnight burglaries at apartments near Berkman Drive and U.S. Highway 290, according to a press release.
The release said the burglaries were committed with the “intent to commit sexual assault.”
People who live in that Northeast Austin neighborhood are worried. Jose Acuña is one of them.
“It’s not really that safe, because I got a little sister then my mom out here as well. When my mom gets out, she comes out late from work too. So it’s pretty dangerous for her,” Acuña said.
Isamar Flores lives a few apartment complexes down from Acuña. She shares his same concerns.
“With my daughters and to be in an unsafe place when my husband works out of town. It’s just a must to move,” Flores said.
A suspect description provided by the agency says that the suspect is a white or Hispanic male in their 30s, standing between 5’7″ and 5’9″ tall, with a slender build and short brown hair. The suspect may also have facial hair.
APD asks city residents to make sure that their doors and windows are secure at night.
Acuña said he was already concerned before the recent burglaries. Now, he’s even more cautious.
“Just locking all the doors. Making sure everything’s good at night, double checking it,” Acuña said.
This convinced Flores’ family it’s time to find a new place once and for all.
“We already had plans of moving out. But now it’s more like, gotta get out of this area,” Flores said.
Anyone with any information about the burglaries can call APD at 512-974-TIPS. Tips can also be submitted through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program at austincrimestoppers.org or by calling 512-472-8477.
