Chimene Onyeri expected to be moved to Travis County

HOUSTON (KXAN) — A man Austin police say is the person of interest in the attack on Judge Julie Kocurek will soon be moved to the Travis County Jail.

Chimene Onyeri, 28, is being moved because Harris County is dropping the 2015 murder charge against him due to a new racketeering indictment in Louisiana. Travis County District Attorney Rosemary Lehmberg tells KXAN News they have a hold on Onyeri, which supercedes Louisiana’s indictment.

According to Travis County records, the hold on Onyeri is related to his 2012 fraud case, where he was sentenced to three years probation by Judge Kocurek. Last summer, Travis County prosecutors asked Onyeri be arrested for violating probation terms for a similar fraud in Louisiana. He has not been charged in connection with Kocurek’s November attack.

A spokesperson for the Harris County District Attorney’s Office said the murder charge isn’t going away, it will now be adopted into the racketeering indictment. Court filings indicate Onyeri is connected to two murder cases both in Harris County.

The 2015 murder charges names Onyeri as a suspect in the murder of 31-year-old Jacobi Alexander in Houston. Houston police said Alexander was walking alone through an apartment complex when he was approached by two men who shot him. The court documents also list Onyeri and Adrian West as the suspects in the 2008 murder of Kenneth Brooks in Houston.

Onyeri is one of six others named in the indictment. They are accused of organized crime, theft from numerous stores and using counterfeit money in Texas and Louisiana.

Harris County arrested Onyeri Nov. 9 in connection to Alexander’s murder. A search warrant earlier this year of Onyeri’s properties in Houston uncovered firearms, ammo, clothing and equipment typically used by credit card scammers. Investigators also discovered the gun shell casings found outside of Kocurek’s home matched those found at the location of the murder of Alexander in Harris County.

Last month, Kocurek voluntary recused herself from any further proceedings involving Onyeri in her courtroom.
