LUBBOCK, Texas (KLBK) — Theft charges against Texas Tech running back Da’Leon Ward, 20, were dropped Wednesday morning.
A motion to dismiss was filed in the case Wednesday morning with only a brief explanation as to why. It said, “The interest of justice cannot be served through further proceedings in this matter.”
KLBK left a message with the District Attorney’s office to ask why charges were dismissed but their calls have not been returned.
Ward’s attorney Trey Payne originally said the charges would be dropped by day’s end; they were actually dropped before noon.
Ward was pulled over Tuesday afternoon in the 3700 block of Idalou Road in a routine traffic stop. The stop revealed that Ward had a sealed warrant out for his arrest for theft.
The warrant dated June 12 was for a theft case that dated back to Nov. 14, 2017. Texas Tech campus police filed four police reports that evening for reports of stolen cellphones.
In the hours after Ward was arrested, Texas Tech Athletics provided a statement:
“Texas Tech Athletics was made aware this afternoon of an incident involving sophomore running back Da’Leon Ward. We are still looking into the matter at this time and will have no further comment.”
