Cedar Park looks for return to state title game

CEDAR PARK, Texas (KXAN) — Expectations in Cedar Park are high once again.

After two state titles in 2013 and 2015, the Timberwolves are ranked 10th in the AP Class 5A preseason poll.

“We always have a hunting mentality,” Jesiah Whittington said. “We’re always trying to prove something. We’re always trying to get the state ring that’s our goal we’ve always had the mindset that anything less than that is a disappointing season.”

Since their last title in 2015, Cedar Park’s last two seasons have ended in the third round of the playoffs.

“I want our kids to be hungry and want those accolades, but at the end you get an opportunity to go out and play the game and you get to decide that fate for yourself by how well you play,” head coach Carl Abseck said.

Cedar Park hasn’t lost a district game the past three seasons, but they’re expected to be challenged this year by Hutto, which is led by quarterback Chase Griffin, a UCLA commit.

“We’ve all heard we’re not going to be as great as we were in the past, we’re not going to win district,” quarterback Ryan Fiala said. “I think we’re a hungry ready to surprise some people.”

The Timberwolves open the season at home against Vandegrift.
