AUSTIN (KXAN) — Shane Buechele’s name is officially in the NCAA transfer database, according Texas.
On Wednesday night, Anwar Richardson of orangebloods.com first reported that Buechele had informed the coaching staff that he wanted his name entered.
Also on Thursday, freshman quarterback Cameron Rising announced on Twitter that he is transferring to Utah after taking an official visit this past weekend.
With Rising’s official departure, and Buechele possibly leaving — either before the start of the semester begins on Tuesday or after graduating in May — Sam Ehlinger would be the only quarterback on Texas’ roster with any playing experience.
Buechele started every game in 2016, and seven of Texas’ 13 games in 2017, splitting starts with Ehlinger due to injury and performance before losing the starting job during training camp this year.
Rising, a freshman quarterback from Newbury Park, Calif., entered the transfer database in December to explore the possibility of leaving the Longhorns.
Rising didn’t make an appearance in 14 games at Texas. Fellow freshman QB Casey Thompson also entered the transfer database after the Big 12 Championship game. It is unclear if Thompson is returning to the Longhorns for his sophomore season.
Texas is about to lose some depth at the QB position. Junior quarterback Shane Buechele informed Texas on Wednesday he wants to enter the transfer portal. In addition, freshman quarterback Cameron Rising informed UT he was not returning to Austin. If Buechele leaves, the Longhorns would be left with Sam Ehlinger, Thompson and incoming freshman Roschon Johnson at the quarterback position.
