AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 10-year-old boy is in critical condition after being hit by a car in East Austin on Monday.

Austin-Travis County EMS were called to the 1900 block of Antone Street, near Airport Boulevard, at 5:32 p.m. He was taken to Dell Children’s Medical Center where he’s still in the hospital.

Austin police say the boy was hit in the street. The driver stayed at the scene and will not be cited for any traffic violations.

People who live in the area said safety is a major concern since the streets are narrow. “There are children in the streets, riding their bicycles, there are lots of people walking their dogs. and this is a main thoroughfare. People go too fast. There are cars on either side,” one neighbor told KXAN. According to the city, there have not been any traffic complaints filed with 311 regarding Antone Street.

On Tuesday, Maplewood Elementary School says the boy is one of their students. Staff and counselors met with the student’s classmates.
