AUSTIN (KXAN) — With the Supreme Court giving same-sex marriage the green light a little over a week ago, this Fourth of July was an occasion to get hitched and celebrate.

Organizers wanted to make history with the “Big Gay Wedding,” with both couples and supporters showing up at the state Capitol steps.

“I think there were more supporters than couples, honestly. There were about 20 couples, and 400 people RSVP’d to this event on Facebook. And some people who were just there at the Capitol just actually sat and watched the ceremony, which was just amazing,” said Michael MacLaughlin, who was married moments before.

The Travis County Clerk’s Office had extended hours for the wedding rush.
