AUSTIN (KXAN) – As Marvel fans across the country await the opening night of the new Avengers movie, Austin Police put on a special preview for local kids at Dell Children’s Medical Center. The department’s SWAT officers spent Thursday morning scaling down buildings and chasing after “The Joker” for children at Superheroes Day.
Officers dressed up as nine different Superheroes, including Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Captain America, Wolverine, Iron Man, Star Lord, Bat Girl, and Wonder Woman. The Superheroes were on a mission to capture a man in a purple jacket accused of stealing from the children.
It didn’t take long for the Superheroes to corner the Joker.
“He surrendered to us as soon as he found out he was outnumbered,” said Senior Police Officer Matt Harmatuck, who was dressed as Superman.
Most days, these officers are saving the world in their SWAT gear. But Thursday, APD’s all-star team of superheroes was wearing a different uniform.
“The first time you go down that rope and you see one of the kids faces light up, you can tell immediately they forget the reasons about why they’re here,” said Harmatuck. “And that’s why we’re here today– to put a smile on their faces.”
“Some of these kids are going through some really hard times and we feel like this is something that could lighten their day,” said Asst. Police Chief Jason Dusterhoft.
This is the first year Austin Police has orchestrated a full themed show for the kids. According to Dusterhoft, APD plans on making “Superheroes Day” a tradition at Dell Children’s.
