Austin Food and Wine Festival cancels all outdoor events

AUSTIN (KXAN) — If you were planning to spend your weekend noshing on yummy eats and rubbing elbows with the country’s hottest chefs at the Austin Food and Wine Festival, you’ll have to rethink your plans.

On Wednesday, festival organizers decided to cancel all of the outdoor events due to recent rains saturating the grounds of Auditorium Shores and Republic Square Park.

A spokesperson for the city’s Parks and Recreation Department says the load-in for the event was scheduled to start this past Monday, but it had to be pushed back because weather conditions created “overwhelming saturation and safety conditions at the park.”

Festival organizers tried to adjust schedules and delay the set-up, but as of Wednesday, there was still standing water in the park. Due to the grounds conditions, festival organizers would not be able to “safely and effectively” complete the preparations needed for the festival. The decision to cancel the festival was a mutual decision between the festival organizers and the Parks and Recreation Department.

It was an afternoon that brings runners, dreamers, and chin-uppers to auditorium shores. People here were surprised to see the tents come down and the workers moving out.

“There will be some disappointed folks. Hopefully they’ll reschedule,” said David Gonzales.

That may be hard to do with world class chefs flying into Austin, like Andrew Zimmern and Ming Tsai.

Mother nature has dumped more rain on Auditorium Shores than the rest of Austin. Parks and Rec says crews can’t get their equipment in. We tried to get them to tell us which areas caused the most safety concerns, but haven’t heard back.

“I don’t think it should be canceled. I know many, many people were very excited about it,” said Varda Monamour. She goes to festivals here anytime she can. This time, she’s out on a nice day with her son.

“I know Austin likes its perfect weather, but it can’t be perfect all the time,” said Monamour.
