AUSTIN (KXAN) — Austin police are looking the man who robbed two women at gunpoint Tuesday evening in shopping center parking lots. Police say the first robbery happened about 6 p.m. at the Target on Research Boulevard near Ohlen Road. The other happened at the H-E-B at 41st and Red River streets about three hours later.
The victim of the robbery in the Target parking lot was a pregnant woman, and she had her 18-month-old child with her.
“I definitely wanted to warn other moms to be aware,” said the woman, who did not want to be identified.
As she was leaving the store Tuesday and putting her toddler in a car seat, she noticed a suspicious man in the car parked next to them. She says he got out and at first just asked for a couple of bucks.
“I said, ‘I’m busy right now,’ and he said, ‘Well, I’ll wait ’til you’re done.’ So I knew he wasn’t going away,” she said.
The victim says she rushed around to the driver’s seat, but he followed and lunged at her. Then, she saw another woman walking in the parking lot.
“I yelled ‘Help!’ to her. And she stopped and said, ‘What’s going on?’ And he pulled out a gun.”
The victim says the man demanded her purse and cash.
“Finally, he said, ‘I’ll shoot your baby first.’ And that’s when I reached in my car to get some money out for him,” she said.
Police say the descriptions of the suspect and the robbery are the same in the Target and H-E-B incidents. They believe the two crimes are related but are the only two cases linked to this gunman.
