APD patrolling lakes for Memorial Day weekend

AUSTIN (KXAN) – The Austin Police Department is patrolling the lakes of Austin heavily this Memorial Day weekend. APD’s Lake Patrol Unit is enforcing rules that ban personal watercraft’s like jet skis and motorized surfboards.

“Obviously it’s a small craft. The visibility out here is low and as many boats as we have out here, it’s more of a safety concern for everyone,” said APD sergeant Glen Kreger.

For many, memorial day just wouldn’t feel right without spending some time in the sun. On Saturday dozens of boats filled Bull Creek. “This is one of our party coves,” said Kreger as he searched for violations. For the past two years, Kreger has has patrolled Lake Austin. In that time, he’s seen his share of reckless boating and he says when Memorial Day weekend rolls around, the number of calls increase.

“One of the more dangerous things people do is water skiing at night, and also the driving at night and parking in the middle of the lake with no lights on,” said Kreger.

Kreger says the department has brought in extra officers to help make sure everyone stays safe on the water. Along with personal watercraft’s, officers will also be on the lookout for those who are drinking irresponsibly. “Don’t become impaired where you endanger yourself and other people is the main thing,” said Kreger.
