LEANDER, Texas (KXAN) — The Leander ISD board of education approved a plan to put air conditioning on all of its 126 route buses by May 2019.
In August, multiple parents told KXAN about the lack of air conditioning on Leander ISD school buses.
A mother told KXAN at the time she took the photo of the bus driver’s thermometer inside her child’s school bus. Another mother, Erica Smith, said when she saw the same thermometer it read 118 degrees.
“My fourth grader will actually go and open up the freezer door and just stand in the freezer to try to cool her self off because she is so overheated,” reported one parent.
The district will use funds from the 2017 bond as well as a state grant to ensure that 126 buses will have A/C for their student passengers.
Sixteen new buses that are equipped with A/C are on order and will be available by November 2018.
Fifty more replacement buses have been ordered. They will be delivered by summer 2019.
And 60 older buses will be retrofitted with A/C units by May 2019.
