23-year-old charged with murdering father in northeast Austin

AUSTIN (KXAN) — A 23-year-old Round Rock man is charged with murder after the Travis County Sheriff’s Office says he shot and killed his father while he was giving him and his brother a ride home early Sunday morning.

At around 3:14 a.m. Sunday, a woman called 911 “screaming” and said she found her husband dead in a field in the 11000 block of Gregg Lane. When deputies arrived at the scene, they located the body of Leonard Coolidge Sauls III, 45, next to the car, dead from an apparent gunshot wound.

According to an arrest affidavit, victim’s wife told police that on Saturday night, Sauls III’s two adult sons, one of which has been identified as Tabyes Sauls, were intoxicated and waved and pointed guns at people inside the home. Since there were small children in the home, the victim’s wife told the sons to leave.

Just after 1:30 a.m., Sauls III left to take his two sons to their mother’s home in Round Rock, but when he wasn’t home by 2 a.m., the victim’s wife became worried. She, along with her cousin, traced his normal route and while driving on Cameron Road, they saw the victim’s two sons walking along the road. According to an arrest affidavit, she was afraid to stop and ask them what happened because she had seen them with guns earlier.  As the two women were driving, they saw Sauls III’s vehicle in the field on Gregg Lane.

When authorities interviewed Tabyes, he said he had drank alcohol and taken Xanax that night. As his father was driving him home, Taybes told police he shot his father. Taybes told police he did not know the reason why he shot his father or what he did with the handgun.
