AUSTIN (KXAN) — A month and a half shy of his 92nd birthday, a well-respected and retired St. Edward’s University professor finds his name on an unexpected list.
A list no one in the Roman Catholic Church wants to be on.
Brother Gerald Muller, who taught music history, was one of 22 clergymen named by the Diocese of Austin Thursday for having “credible accusations” made against them of sexually abusing a minor.
According to a letter the university sent to staff and students, Brother Muller retired from St. Edward’s in 2014. It wasn’t until 2017 when a 1986 incident involving a student from 1986 was brought to the university’s attention.
The university launched its own investigation and found the accusation to be credible. In November 2017 Brother Muller was banned from campus and all school-sponsored events.
“I never heard anything negative about him, actually quite the opposite,” said one of his former students who reached out to KXAN via Facebook. “He was very revered there, because he was one of the oldest professors. He has quite the past. Used to brag about his old teaching days in California where he taught celebrities. He was kind of a rock star at St. Ed’s.”
Even though he was banned from campus, Brother Muller is not very far away. According to Brother Thomas Dziekan, of Congregation of Holy Cross, Muller is in a Holy Cross assisted-living retirement facility located on the outskirts of the campus. It is set up for older, retired and infirm brothers.
“Brother Muller is still associated with Holy Cross because he is a vowed member of this religious congregation,” Brother Dziekan said a statement. “He has made a perpetual vow to be a member of the Congregation.”
The Austin Diocese says Brother Muller also served at St. Catherine’s on Convict Hill Road in South Austin.
Muller’s blog says he is now fully retired but “still enjoys working with young people sharing his considerable expertise in music, writing and life” and has published 100 books for children.
KXAN went by Brother Muller’s address, but there was no answer.
St. Edward’s University is a private, Roman Catholic university in the Holy Cross tradition with approximately 5,000 students.
